Compared to the previous year, the increase in food and non-alcoholic beverages was 4.4 percent, which further contributes to the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

There was little sign of a price war in the grocery trade in relation to Easter due to the crown crisis. In the middle of the month, low price chains started what they call a price war, which has not contributed significantly to reducing inflation.

From March to April alone, food price inflation was 1.0 percent. This was mainly due to the higher prices of fruit and vegetables, with the change of 4.7 and 5.9 percent, respectively. Statistics from Norway emphasize that part of the price increase can be attributed to the weak crown, which has contributed to a 4.3 percent rise in the prices of imported agricultural products from March to April.

Core inflation, which excludes tax changes and electricity, ended at 2.8 percent last month.

A sharp drop in electricity and fuel prices.

On the opposite side of the price growth scale, electricity prices are reducing inflation. Energy prices have recently been at a record low, contributing to a 34.9% drop in prices from April 2019 to April this year.

The drop in oil prices is also evident in the form of cheaper fuel. The fuel and lubricants category experienced a 9.4 percent drop in prices, which is the lowest measured change in twelve months for this category since July 2009, according to Statistics Norway.

Due to the crown crisis, Statistics Norway has had to make several changes to the April CPI calculation. SSB stated this in a press release before the weekend.

Price trends from March to April for services where consumption was zero or close to zero per month have been projected with the change in the total CPI between the two months.

These include hairdressing and skincare salons, pubs and bars, dentists, theaters, cinemas, museums, gyms, and sporting events. This is because most of these industries have been closed for the entire month, and therefore household consumption must have been very low.

Services where goods were not traded in April represent just over 10 percent of the total CPI, Statistics Norway reports.

The exception to the general rule is for flights, tour packages and hotel accommodation, where price trends are projected with seasonal factors.
