– We are concerned that it goes beyond road safety work, especially in the long term.
This is what UP chief Steven Hasseldal says about the test project.
UP has been tasked by the Police Directorate (POD) with implementing the test scheme, following a request from the Troms and Finnmark police chiefs to strengthen preparedness.
“The purpose is to test whether it is possible to strengthen the surveillance and emergency system in the district without weakening general traffic and control efforts,” writes POD.
It was the Police Forum that first mentioned the case.
– The POD has decided that we will carry out a pilot for a year to test the solution. We faithfully follow the mission, Hasseldal says.
Therefore, police districts will be responsible for road safety this year. UP as a special body is thus closed in Finnmark and Nord-Troms.
Emergency police and traffic.
- The Norwegian Police (UP) is a special national body in the police, which is directly under the Police Directorate.
- It has the primary responsibility for the police traffic service. It works to reduce the number of traffic accidents and crimes, and contributes to the prevention of other crimes.
- In 2018, UP raised $ 325 million for the Simplified Shipping Treasury and $ 212 million photo booths, according to Police College.
- According to the report of the European Transport Safety Council, Norway and Switzerland are the safest countries in Europe for road users.
- Every year more than 100 people die in traffic and more than 500 are seriously injured in Norway. For young people between the ages of 15 and 24, a car accident is one of the most common causes of death.
- The Transport Economics Institute (TØI) has calculated that traffic accidents caused socioeconomic costs of NOK 24.2 billion in 2016 (report TØI 1053C / 2010 with adjusted figures).

According to Hasseldal, there are many violations in Finnmark, both for speeding and speeding.
– It remains to be seen how the police districts are following it, but we are concerned that work is prioritized and that accidents increase. Therefore, it is important that we maintain a high risk of detection to keep accidents low.
For the past four years, Norway has been the country in Europe with the lowest number of people killed relative to the population, according to Hasseldal.
While the UP commander fears poor road safety, the Finnmark Police Chief believes that this will provide better preparedness for the population.
Will be there when needed
Finnen Police Chief Ellen Katrine Hætta tells NRK that they want to obtain a unified police force in Finnmark and believe this can provide better use of resources.
– You can solve both traffic allocation and acute emergencies that way. And you get a general priority that is important and that’s what we constantly want in the police.
According to Hætta, UP is doing what it wants in the district, but now it wants the operations center to be able to allocate the resource where it is needed.
– It is important to note that there will be no free driving due to poisoning or swine in Finnmark. The point is not that we should shut down traffic service, but rather that we move resources from UP to the Finnmark Police District.
She emphasizes that Finnmark will still have a traffic service and that the police should be where they are needed.
The date has not yet been set, but it will be in the summer of 2020.
– If it improves, I hope it does. That way we can better cover.
