– It’s a fantastic goal, then.
Roald A. The eye is watching a video clip on the mobile. It shows a bullet from a Martin Bjørnbak free kick in the Bodø / Glimt suit. Ranværingen, who last year became the series champion with Molde, was one of the players Øien worked with when he, as a professional agent, made money on soccer transitions.
– It is an industry in which it is not easy to survive, Øien tells NRK.
He was young this time. And just as young when he first became a father. Madelen is the oldest of her four children.
Roald Øien has made an academic career like lightning, becoming one of the youngest teachers in the country, and the youngest at UiT, the Arctic University of Norway.

And when he was diagnosed with autism when he was three years old, that changed everything.
– It is a large field, which has very big problems with social issues. It does not mean that they will not be social. It just means they have a problem with that, Øien tells NRK.
Lightning Academic Career
We met the young professor in the main office at the Strandveien residence in Tromsø. One of the children barely stops after school, but goes back out to play with friends.
On the wall there are pictures of the whole “flock”.
– Up there is the inspiration itself, ho Madelen, who will soon be 14, says Øien, pointing to the image in the center of the wall at the top.
She became the beginning of what has become a lightning academic career for the eye. He invested everything in autism studies, eliminated a bachelor’s and master’s for three years, and in April became one of Norway’s youngest teachers.
And the youngest from the Arctic University of UiT in Norway, at only 35 years old.
Daughter Madelen was smiling and happy as a little girl. And she still is, according to Dad.
It only took two and a half years to complete his doctorate. He also has an assistant position at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale University, in the United States.
– It is always good to reach your goals before thinking about it. At the same time, there is a lot of work behind this. And I’m very proud of that, Øien says.
They have set new goals
Now the father-in-law wants to establish an environment for autism research in Tromsø.
– We have the conditions to create a very good atmosphere here. Therefore, I have the goal that we need to create a broader professional environment for clinical and research services.
The young teacher believes that it is important to be able to make a diagnosis as soon as possible.
– It is about spreading knowledge about the early characteristics of health stations and general practitioners. Starting to help earlier increases the possibility of becoming independent as a young person and adult. And how well they are doing in society. There is also a socioeconomic issue. If we get more people to work as adults, then it’s great for employment. And not least the quality of life of those who have these diagnoses. It’s also about the parents. And that they should worry as little as possible. I have known it myself.
And after living ten years with a daughter with autism, the teacher finally emphasizes:
– What I want to promote the most is that it is absolutely possible to have a good life. – even if you have a child with autism. Yes, it is an extra challenge. But terribly gratifying, Roald ends the eye.
