Three prisoners at Kristiansand prison attempted to escape on Saturday. One climbed six stories up the prison facade and ended on the roof of the Kristiansand District Court.

Police were notified of the incident at 6.50pm on Saturday night.

Three inmates from Kristiansand prison are said to have come out breaking a window, according to the Parent Federation, which mentioned the case for the first time.

Two of the inmates turned around and quickly surrendered, while the last one continued the escape attempt and climbed the exterior of the facade from the ninth floor to the roof of the Kristiansand District Court facility. Here he was arrested on the roof of the third floor.

The Kristiansand Prison is located on the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors, in the same building as the Kristiansand Police Station and District Court.

“At 7:07 pm, the man was arrested before reaching ground level,” operations manager John Repstad in the Agder police district told VG.

– Special situation

About 10-12 police officers participated in the action, and several of them were armed.

– We did it for security. We didn’t know what the prisoners managed to escape with when they escaped, police response officer Frank Salvesen tells the Parents Federation.

He admits that this was a very special situation that the police rarely experience.

The man arrested on the third floor was in custody, accused of serious violent crimes, while trying to escape.

Broken plexiglass

The three prisoners came out to the ninth floor using a wooden bench to break a window in the common area, says the acting head of the department at Kristiansand prison, Kjetil Kallevik to Fædrelandsvennen.

He says there are no bars on the window, but a hard form of Plexiglass that should be difficult to crush. Here is an alarm connected, which went off immediately.

“The staff responded immediately and immediately to contact the police and begin work to arrest the prisoners,” said Kallevik.

He confirms that two of the inmates quickly surrendered, but the third went down the facade, without ropes or other aids.

“It looks like he used the holes in the new facade to go down,” Kallevik told FV.

He has no information on whether the escape attempt occurred spontaneously or was planned.

The inmates are now under control and a case will be established with police interrogations.

For there to be a man on the roof

Eva Henriette Dean witnessed the incident on Saturday afternoon.

– I have an apartment right across from the police station. Suddenly I look out the window and see that there was a man on the roof and a lot of police on the street, she says.

Dean didn’t know how the man had climbed onto the roof.

– When I saw him, he called the police and asked him to get off the edge and get off. Then he went deeper into the roof and, as I understood it, the police stopped him on the other side, she says.
