A five-year-old boy from New York became the first to die of the disease, called “pediatric multisymptomatic inflammatory syndrome.” The syndrome is likely related to covid-19.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told a news conference on Friday that the state Department of Health is investigating several similar cases in children.
“It will be very bad news and they will open a whole new chapter,” Cuomo told NBC News.
“It is an extremely rare and previously unknown presentation of covid-19 in children,” the Mount Sinai Health System said in a statement.

More than 100 children in the United States have been diagnosed with the newly identified syndrome. At least eight states have reported cases.
New York health authorities ask parents to seek immediate medical attention for their children if these criteria are met:
- Prolonged fever (more than five days)
- Difficulty feeding the baby or the child is too sick to absorb fluids
- Severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting.
- Skin color change: skin becomes pale, blotchy and / or blue
- Breathing difficulties or hyperventilation.
- Rapid heart rate or chest pain
- Longer time between urination
- Apathy, irritability, or confusion.
Most concerning is that children can develop heart problems as a result of the heart not pumping as efficiently as it should. The problem appears to be the result of the child’s immune system becoming hyperactive after a covid-19 infection.
Most children with pediatric multisymptomatic inflammatory syndrome have also been diagnosed with covid-19, but not all. During a press conference in New York on Friday, doctors said it could be because some children don’t develop symptoms.
