Ishall in Stockholm transforms into a morgue

In the last 24 hours alone, 106 people have died in Sweden. The death toll is now 793.

Therefore, Sweden has significantly higher death rates than Norway and Denmark. The country has also had to face criticism for the way they have handled the virus, and several have responded to the lack of measures to stop the spread.

– A last resort

To deal with the large number of deaths, authorities are now considering using Stockholm’s many ice cream parlors as temporary morgues.

– When it comes to ice cream parlors, there is an alternative that we are considering. Given the situation we are in now, we must prepare ourselves to be able to treat the deceased in a dignified manner, says Joakim Jarnryd of the Stockholm hospital regional administration.
Expressen.

It is the Stockholm regional hospital that, together with the hospital administration and the Stockholm municipality, is considering the measure.

– As it is currently seen, we have 335 vacancies to deal with the deceased in the usual way. We also have a room where we can accommodate between 500 and 700 deceased. But as a last resort, we are considering using ice cream parlors, Jarnyrd told the newspaper.

Closed indefinitely

The Mälarhöjden ice rink has already been closed as a result of the corona eruption. You should now be ready for the storage of bodies.

The room is located in the south of Stockholm, and is usually the training room of the Djurgården youth team. Now the Djurgården juniors must find a new place to train, and the hall is closed indefinitely.

Jarnryd says he sympathizes with those who now lose their gym, but emphasizes that it is absolutely necessary for the sake of the deceased.

– It is very sad that this is happening. We are in a special situation now. It is also important to be able to handle the deceased in a good way. Hopefully, you will come up with a solution so you can share ice rooms in municipalities, Jarnryd says.

More can follow

The hospital manager asks ice hockey players to see the big picture:

– I hope you can make the effort and understand that it is about caring for the deceased in a dignified way.

If the death toll in Stockholm continues to rise, more ice cream shops may have to follow Mälarhöjden. How many ice cream parlors will Jarnyd not comment on?

– At this point, this is something we are discussing. The amount of ice cream that may be available depends on how the corona virus develops.

Fear a million infected

As Sweden’s death toll rises, authorities fear that up to 10 percent of the Swedish population may be infected. Swedish public health authorities conducted a survey in the Stockholm area to observe the spread of the infection in
country.
