Employees at Maximat and Nordby Supermarket are laid off after the crown crisis has put an end to cross-border trade.

Grensemat AB has decided to lay off 96 employees, writes the local newspaper Strömstads Tidning.
The company owns the Maximat and Nordby Supermarket stores in Nordby Shoppingcenter, as well as Maximat in Svinesund.
The affected employees will lose their jobs from October 1, after they were notified of the layoff in June, COO Göran Lundgren at Grensemat AB tells the newspaper.
When asked if it might be relevant to rehire the laid-off people if the border opens, Lundgren responds:
– If it happens that the border opens and we can return to normal everyday life, then sales will show where we are going, he says.
After the layoffs, there will be about 250 employees at the Nordby and Svinesund grocery stores.
After the crown crisis hit Norway in March, the government has advised against all unnecessary travel for all countries. Later, it was opened for some regions with a satisfactory infection situation, but crossings to large parts of Sweden have resulted in a quarantine obligation when entering Norway.
The closed border has greatly affected cross-border trade. At the end of August, Statistics Norway issued a report showing that Norwegians spent NOK 28 million on cross-border trade in the second quarter. This was a 99 percent decrease from NOK 4.1 billion in the same period last year.
