80 dead sheep were found: – It looked like they died of starvation

On Monday, police investigated a farm in Mid-Troms.

There were about 80 dead sheep. In addition, eleven more sheep were emergency euthanized in the barn on the farm.

The farmer who owns the farm is being questioned by the police. The person in question is accused of violating the Animal Welfare Law.

In poor physical condition

– The Norwegian Food Safety Authority contacted the police, who had received reports from veterinarians, Troms Police District Senior Police Officer Geir Lofthus tells TV 2.

He says the vets considered it so that the eleven sheep that had to be forcibly euthanized were in such poor physical condition that they had no other choice.

There were several sheep on the farm that did not have to be slaughtered, but Lofthus does not have an overview of how many.

I’ve never heard of anything similar

Martin Ness is the leader of the Mid-Troms Farmers Association. He has worked as a farmer for 40 years and is surprised to hear what has happened.

– It is with disbelief that I hear this, it is absolutely incredible. I’ve never heard of anything like this, he tells TV 2.

– If there are 80 dead sheep in the barn now, it can indicate that they have died during the summer. Everyone has sheep in the mountains and grazing now, so this sounds very strange, says Ness.

He further states that the farmer team has a good overview of what is happening in the area, but that Mid-Troms is large and that he has not heard of neglect until now.

– This puts a negative focus on the entire agricultural profession. It’s an ugly case, and that’s not how we want to appear in the profession, he says.
