617 new corona infections registered in the last 24 hours

The increase of 617 is the second highest during the pandemic so far after Monday’s record rise of 704 infection cases.

In the last two days, the increase is 1,321 reported cases, according to figures from the National Infectious Disease Notification System (MSIS).

On average, it takes one to two days from the time a test response is available until it is registered with MSIS. Therefore, the figures can give a misleading picture of the infection situation in recent days, since it does not appear when the sample has been taken, only when it has been registered.

– The increase is not only due to more people being tested

So far, 1,729,701 people have been tested for covid-19 in Norway. Deputy Health Director Espen Nakstad told Dagbladet on Tuesday that the rise in infection rates is not just because more people are being tested.

– We see that there is an increase in infection rates, but also an increasing proportion of those who test positive. This means that the increase is not only due to a lot of testing, but there is a real increase in society, he says.

On Tuesday, 61 inmates with covid-19 were registered in Norwegian hospitals, three fewer than on Monday. The number of patients receiving ventilator treatment is also three, which is the same as on Monday.

So far, 282 people have died from covid-19 in Norway, according to preliminary figures.

– Inside our second crown wave

At a press conference on Tuesday, Health Minister Bent Høie (H) declared that Norway is now in its second crown wave.

– If this development continues, our health service will go to its knees, as we see happening in one country after another in Europe. We all need a man on deck, Høie said.

At the same time, Høie announced that the government will introduce powerful new austerity measures this week to reduce the infection.
