When the thousand dollar bill now goes out of circulation, it marks the end of the old series of bills.

Starting in 1994, Norges Bank’s seventh edition of Norwegian banknotes was presented to Norwegians.

Old banknotes with portraits of Kristian Birkeland, Sigrid Undset, Kirsten Flagstad, Peter Christen Asbjørnsen, and Edvard Munch have since been used to pay for most of Norwegian society.

But as of Sunday it is over. So the thousand dollar bill with Edvard Munch is out of circulation after almost 20 years in Norwegian wallets.

On Friday, 4.3 million crowns have not returned to Norges Bank. This means that after shopping on Saturday, Norwegian stores no longer need to accept NOK 4.3 billion in old thousands.

8.5 billion crowns in old banknotes

E24 has asked Norges Bank for an overview of how many old banknotes have yet to be returned. It shows that there are still around 30 million banknotes from the old banknote series that have not been exchanged.

With the exception of the thousand dollar bill, all the old bills have already gone out of circulation.

In practice, this means that old notes worth NOK 8.5 billion still exist. The total sum includes the thousands that will soon be out of circulation. See how many notes of each type are not yet exchanged in the fact box below in the case.

If you still have old-style banknotes, they can be exchanged at Norges Bank for up to ten years after they went out of circulation.

Currently discontinued banknotes can only be sent to Norges Bank. When the crown restrictions are lifted, it will also be possible to deliver them to central bank deposits across the country, as well as the central bank office in central Oslo.

New banknotes

It has been more than three years since Norges Bank began replacing old notes with new ones. Then came the new 100 and 200 banknotes. Since then, the entire new series of banknotes has been launched. The old ones have stopped circulating one year after the new ones were put into circulation.

The new series of banknotes no longer contains portraits of famous people. Now there are several sea motifs that characterize the banknotes.

While the new thousand dollar bill has been given a wave as a motif, for example, the 500 dollar bill has been given the RS 14 “Stavanger” lifeboat.
