On Wednesday, the National Institute of Public Health states in its new weekly report that 728 new cases of covid-19 were recorded last week. In the past four weeks, the number has been between 357 and 377.

‘Surveillance data and models show that the spread of infection is still at a relatively low level in the general population nationwide. The increase in the number of reported cases is largely due to local outbreaks in Bergen and Fredrikstad / Sarpsborg. Outbreaks require a lot of infection detection work in these municipalities, ”explains FHI.

NIPH states that the number of cases is increasing in a total of six counties: Vestland, Viken, Troms, Finnmark, Trøndelag, Rogaland and Oslo.

“Despite the outbreaks and local clusters, we do not see an increase in hospital admissions, inpatient admissions or deaths associated with covid-19. One explanation is that the infection in recent weeks has occurred mainly in younger people. with low risk of a severe course. At the same time, extensive testing and infection monitoring is likely to contribute to our discovering more cases with a mild course, “writes FHI.

Norwegian red

On Tuesday, both the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) and the European Infection Control Agency (ECDC) declared that Norway has registered more than 20 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. Therefore, the infection pressure in Norway is above the limit by the time FHI recommends red-listing other countries and regions.

– Of course, this is discouraging after the great public service this spring. But there are still mostly clusters, and if we take the right measures, we should quickly reduce the pressure of infection again, NTNU professor of social medicine Steinar Westin told Dagbladet.

Crucial moment

This came shortly after Health Minister Bent Høie and Deputy Health Director Espen Nakstad told Dagbladet that the coming days and weeks will be decisive for Norway’s way forward.

In recent weeks, Norway has carried out more tests than ever, leading to the detection of more cases of infection, making it easier to manage the spread of infection.

The increased infection pressure is mainly due to local outbreaks in Bergen, Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad. The outbreak in Bergen is linked to student settings, while the outbreak in Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad is linked to a religious setting.

Spread of infection

This week, the Bergen municipality has acknowledged that the infection has spread to various parts of society, including nightclubs and restaurants, high schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

At Haukeland Hospital, at least 17 people have been reported infected since Sept. 1. Westin described this as serious.

– Infection in hospitals is serious, not only for patients, but also because many of the employees have to be quarantined. It is detrimental to the functioning of hospitals.
