Norway says scores missing, hundreds flee village after Clay landslide

At least 26 people are unaccounted for and more than 200 have been evacuated after a devastating landslide caused a large sheet of mud in the municipality of Gajerdrum, about 10 miles north of Oslo, at 4 a.m. Wednesday. At least 10 people are being treated for injuries at a local hospital and many homes have been gutted by the blaze. At least one person is in critical condition, officials said.

“The situation is very dramatic. There has been a major landslide and we are preparing to evacuate residents from the area, ”local mayor Ersndersen StØns said Wednesday morning. “Many of them have lost their homes, and of course they are having a hard time. There are many people who are very upset and scared. ”

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg has expressed her concern in a tweet. He wrote, “It is sad to see how the forces of nature have destroyed the geyser drum.” “My thoughts go to everyone affected by the landslide.”

The area around the village is known for its soft clay terrain that turns to fluids with suddenly fluctuating temperatures. Authorities are assessing whether it is safe for rescue workers to enter the area.
