North Korean diplomats need not sit down with the United States to talk because they would simply be a “political tool” for Washington, the country’s state media agency said.
North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said the negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang are essentially unsuccessful. His comments on Saturday came on the eve of a US envoy’s trip to Seoul to discuss stalled nuclear talks with North Korea and mounting tensions.
“We do not feel the need to sit face to face with the US, as it does not view the DPRK-US dialogue as nothing more than a tool to deal with its political crisis,” Choe said in comments broadcast by the KCNA state news agency.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in suggested on Wednesday that President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un should meet before the US election to break the deadlock.
The next day, former Trump security adviser John Bolton told reporters in New York that Trump could schedule another summit with Kim before the election as a “surprise October.”
