NJ Weather: Hurricane Laura Remains to Bring Heavy Rain, Stormy Winds This Weekend

Keep your reindeer handy, New Jersey. More batches of rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the state late Friday and much of the day on Saturday as the residual moisture from Tropical Depression Laura fuses with a low pressure system and goes our way.

Although the showers that are expected on Friday afternoon and Friday evening are not expected to be widespread, some strong thunderstorms may emerge and cause heavy rain dump or isolated wind damage, said forecasters of the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say the threat of severe weather on Saturday will be greater, as showers and embedded thunderstorms move across the Garden State. Some of these storms, triggered by a cold front, can cause 1 to 2 inches of rain to fall, as the remains of Laura’s tropical moisture will add to the atmosphere.

Forecasters say that the remnants of Tropical Depression will merge Laura with a low-pressure system and bring pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms to New Jersey on Saturday, August 29th. In addition to flash floods, “some thunderstorms can be severe, with locally damaging winds the main threat,” the Mount Holly office of the weather service said in a dangerous weather forecast issued Friday.

The bottom line: The first half of the last weekend of August is not a good time to eat out or work on your tan at the Jersey Shore. Sunday, however, is expected to be a decent summer day, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s.

The one downside to Sunday is the expectation of strong winds blowing in the Garden State as the storm system moves to southern New England and eastern Canada.

Laura hit Louisiana on Thursday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, grabbing winds of 150 km / h and leaving a wide trail of destruction in its tracks.
