The French government called it a terrorist attack, although no group has claimed responsibility.
Unidentified gunmen attacked the group on August 9 in the Kouré region, about 50 kilometers from the capital Niamey.
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Nigerian President M. Mahamadou Issoufou about the incident that the French called “the deadly attack that was cowardly against a group of humanitarian workers”, according to a statement from the French presidency on Monday.
The Elysee statement said that President Macron had also sent condolences and the support of the nation to the families of victims and that both the French presidents and the Niger presidents were working to clarify the circumstances of the attack.
“Their commitment to pursue the fight against terrorism in the Sahel remains intact,” the statement said.
ACTED said aid workers helping with the vulnerability affected by the conflict should not be the target of attacks.
“This heinous crime should not go unpunished, and will not distract us from our commitment to support the people of Niger,” the charity said in the statement.
