NFLPA Seeks Voluntary Exclusion Clauses For Players At Risk, Conditional Stipends, Source Says

The NFL and NFLPA continue to negotiate terms for a return to work, and players request financial support in case they decide to stay out of the season.

Among the requests in the players’ recent proposal to the league, according to a source involved:

  • A voluntary exclusion clause so that at-risk players receive a salary (but not bonuses) if one decides not to play.

  • An opt-out clause for players with families at risk to win a cumulative season and benefit if they choose not to play.

  • An exclusion clause for players who leave the team after reporting (uncertain terms).

  • A $ 250,000 stipend guaranteed to all players if they show up to camp and everything closes due to COVID-19 concerns. That amount increases to $ 500,000 if the season begins, just to close.

The definition of “at risk” is part of the discussion, and the procedures for applying for medical exclusion are not yet finalized.

The league memorandum of June 7 listed the following as considerations for high-risk individuals:

The players also want, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, that there will be no custodial salary for 2020 and that there will be no reduction in the 2021 salary cap despite the projected loss of income, which they would prefer to spread out over several years.

A source told Graziano that there are no more talks scheduled between the NFL and the NFLPA on Wednesday, after the two sides spoke each of the past two days.
