NFL Week 9 Grade: Patrick Mahoms and the Chiefs got a ‘B +’ for a wild win, the Bookiners got an ‘F’ in a knockout defeat

In the first half of the season, Patrick Mahoms kind of dropped out of the MVP conversation, but that will likely change this week after the Chiefs quarterback almost single-handedly tied the knockout effort made by the Carolina Panthers during Kansas City’s wild 33. Sunday -31 wins.

In a game where the Chiefs ran for just 30 yards, they needed everything Mahoms gave them and it came with 372 passing yards and four touchdowns, including two Tyrick Hill, who finished with nine catches for 113 yards.

The Chiefs gave the Panthers an early 14-3 lead, but then Mahoms took over. The quarterback’s first scoring pass in the game came on a one-yard throw, and although a one-yard pass isn’t usually something that deserves to show you a highlight, this one was. On the play, it’s not just the chiefs who sent Mahoms inside Speed, But while he was in motion he grabbed the shotgun instantly and then he did this …

That’s almost not fair. Demarcus Robinson’s pass cut Carolina’s lead to 14-15 before halftime, and after the score it seemed Mahomes had no way of losing to the Chiefs.

Although Carolina’s offense went toe-to-toe with Kansas City, Mahoms only did a lot of big plays. With the Chiefs trailing 17-13 in the second half, Mahoms trailed Kansas City on three consecutive assists, and a sudden four-point loss turned the lead into a 33-24 lead.

The Chiefs quarterback threw three touchdown passes in the second half, and one of them was Hill’s 28-yard score, which gave Mahoms 100 touchdown passes for his career, which is significant as he makes it. The fastest player in NFL history to reach 100 career touchdown passes.

Hill’s pass helped the Moms reach 100 touchdowns in just 40 games, topping Dan Marino’s record in 44 games over a period of 34 years.

The quarterback who won the MVP award in 2018 should now be considered the frontrunner to win it in 2020. For the first eight weeks of the season, Russell Wilson was the frontrunner due to Seattle’s “Let’s Rush Cook” decision, but Wilson has burned himself in two of the last three weeks in the kitchen.

There have been other quarterbacks – such as Aaron Rogers, Tom Brady and Josh Allen – who have been good, but Mahoms has been great. He went through 20 touchdown passes in Sunday’s game and one interruption in the season, which is significant as no other quarterback in NFL history has been able to throw 20 or more touchdowns with one or fewer interruptions through eight games, and now he’s added to that. Through nine games, Mahoms is almost complete, throwing up 2,687 yards and 24 touchdown passes with one pick.

Mahoms isn’t making any mistakes right now, and it’s almost impossible to beat him when the Chiefs don’t make mistakes as the Panthers met on Sunday.
