NFL rumors: League to investigate MetLife turf after 49 injuries, complaints

The NFL has seen pain on the faces of 49 people and they have heard their cries.

Following the leg injuries to four key 49ers in Sunday’s 31-13 win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, the league’s “field operations department will take a closer look at the situation based on concerns raised by the 49ers,” Pro Football Talk legend Mike Florio quoted a league source.

Jimmy Garoppolo, Rahim Mustart, Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas were all knocked out of the game with potentially serious injuries.

Coach Kyle Shanah hinted after the game that Bosa probably. The torn left holds the ACL. Garoppolo has a sprained ankle and may not be available for next week’s game. Thomas could lose significant time, while Mustart reportedly has a mild MCL sprain.

49ers have a right to worry. Speaking of a bizarre schedule, they will have to play again at MetLife Stadium next Sunday, along with another tenant of the building, the New York Giants.

NBC Sports Bay Area analyst and former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia said on “49ers Postgame Live” on Sunday that the league should consider moving the 49ers-Giants game out of MetLife Stadium because of the turf issue.

“If the turf is that bad, and it’s bad for both teams – not just one team – it’s bad for both teams,” Garcia said. “They’ll assume there are other places nearby that might be an option to move. You’re not asking the fans to move. You’re just asking the teams to move. Maybe it’s a college stadium, or maybe it’s the Philadelphia Eagles’ stadium, whatever nearby.” Who can work for both teams.

“This needs to be addressed, because if they are suffering major injuries due to the quality of the field, they are looking for a livelihood for the players.”

It’s not clear if moving the game to another location is an option the NFL is considering, but it would be a clever move until they figure out how to create a safe zone in East Rutherford, NJ.

Interestingly, the Jets don’t seem to have an issue with the turf at their home stadium.

“We were so busy that our faces were kicked to worry about the field,” a source in the Jets told Florio.
