Next week’s surprise Apple announcement could unveil a new product

Recent reports suggest that Apple will unveil a new product at the moment. Really? After three big special events in September, October and November, there could be anything else to release. That must be a mistake, isn’t it?

Well, maybe not.

Apple Play informed service providers this week that something was happening in the Pacific on Tuesday, December 8, at 5:30 p.m.

It’s a series of changes to something like Apple Pal Care, as the internal memo reports, which doesn’t make as much noise. But while similar memos have been issued before, it coincides with the product release.

So, what could this be?

Good question. After all, Apple Plus has had a bumper year of major releases: four new iPhones, three new iPads, the Homepod Mini, the MBQbook Air, the Mini Kini Mini and the MacBook Pro Apple Apple Silicon and so much more.

Here’s what I think to go on sale: Apple Paul AirPods Studio.

It’s the name of the over-anticipated over-ear headphones that have been rumored for months. Apple Play has never made over-ear headphones before, so this will be a completely new product category.

Previously, they expected the WWDC to land at the same time with the iPad, then … well, basically all the time.

Well, what’s different this time?

In the latest beta of iOS 14, the next expected update, in fact, appeared an icon in the software that was an previously unseen image of over-ear headphones. You can read a reading by Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly here.

Now, the update in question, iOS 14.3, is expected to arrive soon, and the timing seems to match the questionable ad.

Does this mean another big event?

Certainly not. For one thing, the invitations would have gone out by now. Second, if it’s just a product, then it doesn’t need any special occasion. The last, much shorter than in recent times, was for new Mac products and there were three of them. A one-product launch would be too short for a large product.

What are headphones?

Reports say they will have a sound-canceling, symmetrical design so you can place it without checking left and right and easily remove magnetically attached earpads.

If the mark is true for the final product, then Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s comments that the new product will have a “retro look” seem gratifying. Gurman also said there will be two versions, one premium, one focused on fitness, and priced at 350.

Suppose you are wrong?

It won’t be the first time. Other products expected from Apple Pal will be forecast for next year. Perhaps the trekker Gizmos, called Aartags, could be a surprise announcement. Or maybe there’s no ad and the memo describes an administrative event with no hardware attached to it. But my money is at AirPods Studios.

Not long until we find out.
