Next-Gen Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ spy on video

Since Subaru confirmed to us in 2018 that there would be a replacement for its favorite BRZ sports coupe, we’ve been waiting at the edge of our seats to see what it’s going to look like. Thanks to this spy video made by Instagram user Kystify and shared by Matt Maran Motoring on Youtube, it looks like we’ve finally got our wish.

The video in question is only a few seconds long, and shows what looks like a next-gen 86 as BRZ tests on a busy city street. The dimensions of the car are not too different from the current model, which, according to several reports, just ended the production. The front and rear fashions are the biggest deviations in terms of design, with the prototype having a much cleaner, sturdier nose, and a fully-fitted rear end with a built-in hull spoiler.

According to the video above, this clip was shot in Ann Arbor Michigan, where one of Toyota’s technical facilities is based. A next-gen 86 show of close testing makes sense.

While the production of the car is confirmed, what is not yet certain is what is under the hood. Like the latest gen car, it will be a collaboration with Toyota and Subaru, and is expected to get a flat-four-engine – probably a version of the 2.4-liter FA24 currently used in ‘ and Subaru Ascent. In that application, the engine is turbocharged, although a report from Japanese sits Best car earlier this year suggested the 86 and BRZ will get a naturally aspirated version.

Previous rumors have suggested a launch date in the spring of 2021, so we’ll have to wait until then to know for sure.
