All through Monday, Newsmax viewers were considered short-sighted – yet significant – revelations from the network’s hosts: that Newsmax had no evidence that Dominion or Smartmatic rigged votes in the 2020 election; That Newsmax has no evidence that Dominion or Smartmatic has any relationship with George Soros; Newsmax has no evidence that Dominion uses Smartmatic’s software or; And it’s a smartmatic US company, not a Venezuelan government. Newsmax picks this frame Advertising As an explanation, however, the network maintained that it could never impose any conspiracy theories about the companies.
This extraordinary face came to light earlier this month after Smartmatic sent a rash legal threat to Newsmax and other right-wing media outlets. Ben Rhodes summed up Monday’s messages, To tweet“So, we’re going to spread a massive amount of total disintegration, such as cancer metastasis, by American democracy, but we’re also not willing to sue so we’re making this clear.”
And while Fox News has also been running a similar news package over the past few days, downplaying some of its own hosts and guests’ claims, it felt more surreal than Newsmax. It can also have more business implications for smaller networks. Newsmax, after all, has chosen viewers from Fox, positioning itself as the home for rejecting the election. While Fox didn’t go far enough for some, Newsmax was willing to do so – for example, if Biden refused to be recognized as president-elect until the Electoral College ledge officially voted. In addition to telling viewers that Newsmax has no evidence to support some of the wild conspiracies that have emerged on the network, it seems that hosts may be warned to be more cautious about claims made on their programs. As Sebastian Gorka filled the show with Greg Kelly at 7 p.m., My Pillow CEO Michael Lindell started talking about Dominion. Gorkha iImmediately cut it off. “That’s enough,” Gorkha said to each other. “I don’t want to discuss – Mike, Mike, we’re not going to go into the details.”
Justin Baragona of the Daily Beast made a big point about the sequence of events. Barogana Tweeted“Imagine how confusing and provocative this must have been for viewers, especially turning to Newsmax because the channel was telling them that the election was stolen from Trump by corrupt voting software and Hugo Chavez.” I asked Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy on Monday night what he would say to upset viewers. At least the network had its hosts deliver “clarification” to its viewers. As Vapo’s Jeremy Bar Tweeted“It seems a bit different when it comes to Newsmax’s personality than what Fox News did, which was to use an industry expert who had no idea he was being used for an interview.”
OAN still feeds viewers fantasy
Fox and Newsmax may have run these packages acknowledging the reality of the situation, but it should be pointed out that One America News continues to feed its viewers a pure idea of the election. One of his personalities, for example, had a fiction in Monday’s report, which read, “‘Dominating-Easing’ The Vote.” Another coward read, “The Art of the Style.”
