Newhaven ‘explosion’ sparked enormous flames as smoke billows were seen for miles


An enormous fire has erupted in East Sussex with massive thick clouds of smoke seen for miles.

Fire and rescue crews were called in today at 9.30am to report a huge blast in Newhaven that can be seen as far as Brighton.

Officials said an industrial building caught fire and has since been evacuated.

Dramatic video images and images of the scene show plumes of dark gray smoke rising from the building.

People in the area are being warned to keep their windows and doors closed as firefighters handle the serious fire.

A witness who shared images of the scene tweeted: “There was a big explosion at the harbor in Newhaven 10 minutes ago.”

Another said, “Warehouse fire in Newhaven harbor. My brother lives nearby, says it’s raining and turns off all smoke alarms!”

Councilor Sean Macleod said: “The Newhaven fire is massive and the air is not very nice, be careful.”

An earlier tweet from him said: “Very large fire in the city please call the emergency services and get out, it soon looks like the building is damaged #newhaven. ”

A local wrote: “Smoke from large fire in Newhaven drifting down the Ouse valley towards Lewes.

“Congratulations to all the firefighters who are addressing this.”

Another said: “Large unit fire in Newhaven. Hope everyone is safe and well away from the fire.”

A statement from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called at 09.32 today 8 August 2020 following reports of a fire in Newhaven.

“An industrial building on Beach Road has been lit.

“More than 80,999 calls have been made to us.

“The building has been evacuated.

“As of 10.30, there are 12 fire engines on the scene along with two water carriers.

“There are no reports of injuries.

“Avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke.”

Sussex police have tweeted: “Our colleagues @EastSussexFRS have to deal with a large fire in Newhaven and recommend that doors and windows be kept closed if you live in the area and avoid if you plan to visit.

“We know the weather is hot, but the smoke is very unpleasant and can affect you.”
