New York Police Tackle Police Video Putting Woman Into Unmarked Van

The video shows a woman, identified by the New York Police Department as 18-year-old Nicholas Stone, struggling while being pulled over by officers and then stuffed into an unmarked gray truck. Bicycle officers appear to be blocking groups of people at the scene.

In a series of tweets, New York police said Stone was “wanted for damaging police cameras during 5 separate criminal incidents in and around City Hall Park.”

When officers from the New York Police Order Squad arrested Stone, they were “robbed with stones and bottles,” the department said.

The New York Police Order Squad uses unmarked vehicles to locate the suspects, and bicycle officers wearing yellow and blue uniform shirts were there to help make the arrest, New York police said.

CNN has failed to reach Stone and it is still unclear who his legal representatives are.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was “the wrong time and the wrong place” to arrest the woman. The mayor was commenting on Wednesday after a journalist asked him about the video.

He went on to say that New York City is not Portland, Oregon, and that the New York Police are not federal agents. Portland has been the scene of ongoing protests that began largely after the assassination of George Floyd and continued after President Donald Trump dispatched federal forces around the July 4 holiday to protect federal property.

De Blasio also said what happened was “troublesome” and not the kind of thing he wants to see in the city.

“It is the responsibility of the police, if someone commits a response crime, they should follow up. Given the atmosphere in the country and the real concerns that people have, it should not be in the middle of an ongoing protest.” Blasio said.

The mayor will speak to the New York police commissioner today about the incident because he believes there was a better way to make it happen, he said.

The New York Civilian Complaints Review Board received a complaint about an incident involving a protester taken to a police van on Tuesday and will be investigated, said board spokesman Ethan Teicher.
