The city’s most uniformed police officer was injured when he was attacked by a group of people who were at a George Floyd protest on the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday morning, police said.
Department chief Terence Monahan received “life-threatening injuries” during the fight, a New York police spokesman said.
Monahan’s finger was broken when he was hit with an object, police said. At least two other officers were seriously injured.
At least 10 protesters were arrested during the bridge march, another police source said.
Monahan has expressed his outrage at the police officers who were injured during the protests.
Monahan was captured in an iconic video that knelt and hugged protesters in Washington Square Park on June 1. Monahan, who is from the Bronx, has been with the department for 38 years.
