Each count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Drew Strauss, acting attorney for the United States for New York’s Southern District, called Hayden a “white coat hunter” at a news conference.
Hayden’s attorney declined to comment. The former doctor was due to appear before a federal judge later Wednesday.
Strauss said in a statement that he was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with seducing and inducing six victims to travel internationally to engage in illegal sexual activity.
Among the women who have come forward to file charges against Evelyn is Evelyn Yang, the wife of a former Democratic presidential candidate. He told CNN in an exclusive interview in January that he was sexually assaulted by Hayden.
CNN Investigators reported in February that dozens more defendants have come forward and new evidence has emerged that indicates that Columbia University officials were warned about Hayden’s behavior in the mid-1990s.
CNN received a letter from a former patient to Colombian authorities in 1994 in which Hayden made clear allegations of sexual harassment against him. The head of the hospital’s bstetrics and gynecology unit responded to a letter from the patient accepting the receipt and said his concern would be allayed – but the accused says the officer never went back to him.
Columbia said at the time that the university was “deeply saddened by the behavior of Robert Hayden who is now filling e.” The school did not say what was done about the letter and whether an internal investigation has been launched.
In a statement on Wednesday, Yang thanked the prosecution for “bringing these charges against Dr. Hayden.”
“They are long overdue. This therapist has abused dozens of underage women in the name of drug practice and should not walk free.”
Yang said he was not one of the accused identified in the indictment.
Federal authorities asked anyone who had worked with the former OB / GYY to come forward if they saw suspicious behavior.
Strauss said Hayden “touches inappropriately, squeezes and even licks his victims.”
“For many victims, Hayden was their first gynecologist,” he added. “Many of Hayden’s victims did not know what to expect during the OB / JVY exam and Hayden was less likely to challenge when he engaged in sexually abusive behavior. Many did not know that his exams were inappropriate and so returned to see him for years. Was. ”
Strauss said the former doctor “found, abused and abused” a girl, whom he described as a child, and “did the same abuse to adults.”
The unsolicited indictment states that Hayden “used his position as a medical doctor at a leading university … his victims believed that it was appropriate and medically necessary for him to sexually abuse them,” according to the unsolicited indictment. He allegedly “encouraged his victims to return to visit him and often instructed his victims to schedule follow-up visits at scheduled timelines.”
The indictment accuses the doctor of “creating opportunities to be alone with his victims,” sending nurses and medical assistants out of the examination room, “trying to develop a rapport with them and facilitating them by asking questions about their personal lives and” Tell him about his own life and family, and bring up inappropriate and medically irrelevant sexual topics “without questioning his patients”. ”
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office Fees, which argued with Hayden in 2016 on sexual misconduct charges, told CNN that its office fees have provided significant assistance in federal investigations.
The office also noted ongoing investigations into possible failures by its employer, which is “intensely active and ongoing.”
Helden, a former doctor at Columbia University’s hospital system, faced nine charges of sexual harassment when he dealt with the application. He pleaded guilty to two counts: criminal sexual act in the third degree and forcible touching.
Allegations made by Yang and others earlier this year sparked outrage over the terms of the deal: Head handed over his medical license, but did not receive prison time, probation or community service.
Columbia University, its affiliates and the still-pending lawsuit against Hayden argued that they had “hidden, conspired and enabled” Hayden’s sexual exploitation.
In court papers, Head denied the allegations, other than his previous guilty plea.
Columbia and the hospital system have fought a lawsuit based on the lawsuit.
In response to detailed questions about the allegations against Columbia, as to why Hayden was allowed to return to work after his initial arrest, a university spokesman said earlier this year that the allegations against Hayden were “vague” and that he had a deep apology. The trust was violated.
