“Vigilance, courage, and the adoption of basic New Yorker behaviors (wearing masks, handwashing, and social distancing) have fueled our ability to control the virus, and we need to continue on that path to success,” said Cuomo .

The situation in New York is in stark contrast to other states, primarily in the south and west, which have seen alarming spikes in cases in the past few weeks after aggressive reopening plans took hold.

Texas saw 10,000 new cases for several consecutive days this week, while Florida recorded more than 10,000 new cases daily for the tenth time on Friday.

“As New York continues to show progress in fighting COVID-19 with low hospitalizations and a low positive case rate, we remain alarmed at spikes in much of the country and the risk of home non-compliance as the state is chasing a phase, data-based reopening, “Cuomo said.

One hundred people remain intubated in hospitals and 172 are being treated in ICUs at the Empire State, according to data published by the state health department. Cuomo said that of 69,817 COVID-19 tests conducted on Friday, 754 tested positive at a rate of 1.08 percent.
