And the issues are not just garbage, but sitting and platforms.
“It’s like someone peeked into the seat,” said Ashley Rodriguez, the rider.
It has always been against the rules of defecation in subway cars, but the transport board is now codifying those rules.
But, there are others that come with these rules, including a limit on the use of wheeled carts while sitting, sleeping or over 30 inches, which does not apply to baby strollers. Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online.
“I think the biggest issue is that it can be distracting and takes energy and effort from solutions that can work,” said Ina Duggan of Partnership for the Homeless.
Things like outreach, mental health care and supportive housing are all possible solutions.
For its part, the MTA says it’s all about the health of riders and workers.
MTA chairman Pat Foy said the rules are aimed at reducing health risks to every customer and employee of the system.
Some consumers feel sympathy for the homeless.
“A lot of people are going through difficult times, especially with epidemics and job losses,” said one passenger. “I think we need to find alternative solutions to help those people instead of penalizing them.
