Statins are widely used drugs to lower cholesterol. U.S. Recent research from the University of San Diego (University of California, San Diego) shows that the static associated with school medicine reduces the risk of serious covid-1 disease, as well as faster recovery time.

Now another research team, also from UC San Diego School of Medicine, has explained why this happens. The first study was published in The EMBO Journal, and the American Journal of Cardiology is new. In short, statins remove cholesterol from the cell membrane, which in turn prevents the coronavirus from entering.

We know that SARS-COVI-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, enters human cells using a protein called ACE2 on the cell surface. ACE2 may be affected by prescription statins.

The researchers studied the UC of the Covid-19 and 5,281 Covid-negative control patients. San Diego Health analyzed the electronic medical records of 170 patients admitted to the hospital between February and June 2020.

Statin use is associated with less than 50% risk of developing severe covid-19. Patients not taking statins also recovered faster in patients taking statins.
