A third consecutive day of temperatures over 90 degrees is expected Monday in New Jersey, though it will appear to be over 100 once again due to the more stifling humidity levels.
Heat rates could reach 110 degrees over a wide swath of the state that stretches from Mercer to Cumberland counties, the National Weather Service said.
Even along the Jersey shore in Asbury Park and Atlantic City, forecasters call for a 102-degree heat index with low temperatures in the mid-90s. In Cape May, it will feel like a scorching 101 degrees in the mid-afternoon, while the heat index could reach 103 in Newark.
An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 pm for almost all of central and southern Jersey. The areas along the Jersey shore and Hunterdon County, as well as North Jersey – Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Warren and Union are under a heat warning until 8 pm
Despite the heat and humidity, the National Weather Service says there is only a 20% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. It stays pretty warm at night and mercury only drops in the mid-70s.
According to the National Weather Service, as hot as Sunday when temperatures hit 96 in Newark and 94 in Trenton, forecasters say Monday will be even warmer with highs of 97 and 99 in the forecast. Temps hit 93 at Atlantic City International Airport in Egg Harbor Township and should match that number on Monday afternoon.

The heat wave will last at least one more day on Tuesday, with forecasters requiring mostly sunny skies, mid-1990s highs and slightly less humidity.
Showers and thunderstorms are more likely on Wednesday with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s.
The all-time highs for July 20 are 99 in Trenton (1991) and 101 in Newark (1980). In Atlantic City, the record 99 was set last year.
The normal highs on July 20 are approximately 86 degrees.
