Last month, Google announced that it’s consolidating its new ‘home for work’ communication and document editing into one app. The new Gmail is now reaching out to G Suite customers on Android and the web.
This “integrated work environment” wants to keep users in the Gmail window they are probably already open. On mobile, there are now four tabs in the bottom bar, while the sections online appear in the left sidebar:
- Mail that has not changed and is the same Gmail experience that users know and love.
- Chat, which allows users to instantly message individuals and small groups.
- Rooms, which are spaces that share conversation, files and tasks to make groups easier on projects.
- Meet, with upcoming meetings you can view and attend.
The one for video calling is just completely unrolled, while the email experience does not change. One-to-one and group messaging, as well as shared spaces for projects, are the primary change.
Another addition for markers is the ability to edit a shared document “directly in the context of where you are currently doing your work.” Other key features include new integration of Google Tasks that support group and setting “Do Not Disturb” as well as “Statue Outside”.
- Identify important rooms so that they are easier to find and accessible.
- View files shared in a room.
- View integrated search results and switch between email and chat results on the web.
- Start a new meeting or see your upcoming meetings under “Meet” on the web.
Google Admin Console> Apps> G Suite> Google Chat and Classic Hangouts> Service Status
This new Gmail experience first extends to G Suite domains that have the “Chat preferences” setting enabled. This also disables classic Hangouts.
It starts rolling out today for those on the Rapid Release track with full availability in about two weeks. Domains for scheduled release can expect it from September 1st. Gmail for iOS support coming later.
