New coronavirus symptoms listed by CDC

Three additional coronavirus symptoms have been added to the list by the Centers for Disease Control.

The CDC now lists 11 COVID symptoms, but cautions that not all patients experience all symptoms. The symptoms are:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches.
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or odor.
  • Sore throat
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Nasal congestion or discharge, nausea and diarrhea are the newest additions to the list of symptoms. The original symptoms listed by the CDC were fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Subsequently, the agency added chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and new loss of taste or smell.

According to the CDC, people with COVID-19 have a wide range of symptoms that appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Older adults and those with underlying medical conditions appear to be at increased risk of developing more serious complications from the virus.

To protect themselves from the coronavirus, people are recommended to:

  • Wash your hands frequently or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with someone who is sick.
  • Stay home as much as possible.
  • Put distance between yourself and other people.
  • Wear a cloth face covering when you go out in public.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
