New Balance closes Skowhegan and Norridgewock factories after employee experiences coronavirus symptoms

New Balance factories in Norridgewock, above, and Lawrence, Massachusetts, made protective masks for emergency and healthcare workers. Now only the Lawrence plant does. After a worker started showing symptoms of COVID-19 this week, the Skowhegan and Norridgewock plants were closed for cleanup. Rich Abrahamson / Morning Sentinel Archive Buy this photo

Kurt Hopfenspirger, a company spokesman, said in an email on Wednesday that the company was notified by an associate that it had demonstrated possible symptoms of COVID-19 and, as a precautionary measure, the factories in Skowhegan and Norridgewock were closed.

As a precaution, he added, the Norwegian factory will also be closed on Thursday. All facilities will be properly cleaned as virus coverage and will reopen after the holiday weekend.

“We will continue to follow our comprehensive health and safety guidelines and plan to reopen all factories after the holiday weekend,” he said.

Both the Skowhegan and Norridgewock factories produced face masks, but Hopfenspirger said they have now returned to normal production of New Balance products. All masks are now exclusively produced at the company’s factory in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
