Chapel Hill, NC The NC High School Athletic Association will not play football this fall and all other sports will see changes to their schedules following a vote by the NCHSAA board on Tuesday night, NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker announced in a video class on Wednesday afternoon.
High school football season will begin in early February and run through early April, while no sports will be allowed to hold official tryouts or practices until at least Nov. 4.
The first sports to be played are country and volleyball, beginning in November and running in early January. Swimming will follow, beginning in late November and running through late January.
Basketball season has resumed after December. It will run from December to mid-February. Youth football and lacrosse for boys and girls are scheduled to begin in January and end mid-March.
Golf, boys tennis, girls soccer, and softball will be played in March and April. Then the sports year will end with baseball, girls tennis, track & field, and wrestling from mid-April to mid-June.
All seasons will be shortened, with football playing seven games and most other sports playing 14 games. Cross country, swimming & diving, and track & field will have 10 leagues.
No decisions have been made about the state’s playoffs, but the NCHSAA says they plan to hold playoffs.

- March 1. 30: Golf, boys ‘tennis, girls’ soccer, softball (First league, March 15)
- April 12-June 11: Baseball, Girls Tennis, Track & Field, Wrestling (First League, April 26)
- May 1: Cheerleading invitation
The NCHSAA will hold a press conference at 3:30 a.m. to answer questions from members of the media.
The fall sports season was scheduled to begin on August 1st. But the NCHSAA postponed that date until Sept. Then, earlier this month, the NCHSAA postponed the start of the fall sport, after Governor Roy Cooper extended Phase 2 of the state’s opening plan until at least Sept. 11.
