NCAA to allow FBS teams to schedule ‘Week 0’ games on August 29, according to reports

The NCAA Football Oversight Committee has issued a blanket exemption that allows FBS schools to schedule games for the weekend of August 29, called “Week 0,” according to multiple reports.

The measure allows schedule flexibility amid COVID-19 concerns. With a week off after their first games, teams could now quarantine players for longer periods if necessary. Games scheduled for later in the season could also be pushed up to September 5 to avoid the “cold and flu season” of late November.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports was the first to report the news:

Two Big 12 schools have already scheduled games for “Week 0”. Oklahoma moved its first game on Sept. 5 against the state of Missouri for one week until Aug. 29.

Kansas picked up a game against southern Illinois after its first previously scheduled game against New Hampshire was canceled. The Colonial Athletic Conference, of which New Hampshire is a member, announced last week that it was postponing the 2020 soccer season to spring.
