NCAA Football Supervision Commission sets 12-hour schedule model for idle teams

The NCAAs commission for oversight of football has developed a 12-hour schedule model for teams not playing this fall, which it recommended to the ICA Division Board for Tuesday.

West Virginia Athletic Director Shane Lyons, chair of the Football Supervision Commission, told ESPN on Tuesday that the model includes time for strength and conditioning, meetings and five hours of field activities with helmets. Lyons said he expects the Council to approve the plan at its meeting Wednesday afternoon.

The model aims to provide some structure and ongoing practice time to several conferences that have decided to extend their seasons until the spring amid the coronavirus pandemic, including the Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West and Mid-American.

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour, who is on the NCAA’s oversight committee for football, said Monday that the group is trying to figure out what “not exactly spring-ball-ish will look like, but it will be a hybrid like that. football programs lead into what would be a spring season. “

“Let’s keep it in mind,” said Barbour, “whether we project to play in the fall or project to play in the spring, we all project just to play.”
