NCAA Board of Governors approves exemption from fall eligibility no matter how it affects Georgia

ATHENS – The NCAA Board of Directors has approved a new exemption policy that will give all bankruptcy athletes an additional year of approval, regardless of how much they participate in the fall or spring semester.

According to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach a “blanket waiver” is passed that will get help from athletics to a fallout athlete who would have built up his / her eligibility in 2020-21.

That means seniors can return to current football teams without counting against the 85-scholarship limit.

A recommendation to move fall championships to the spring was also approved. However, this measure does not apply to the FBS football rank as matters stand.

A look at the Georgia football roster reveals that the new added scheme to support eligible seniors is unlikely to have much impact on the Bulldogs, with injuries.

Most of the UGA seniors have already started or played enough to show NFL concept as a free agency.

However, the added year of eligibility could trigger some sophomores and juniors in Georgia to consider a transfer now that they would be eligible to stay at another school for three or four years.

The Bulldogs have had three prominent player transfers this past offseason: Cade Mays (Tennessee), Otis Reese (Ole Miss) and Divaad Wilson (Central Florida).

Because Mays and Reese transferred within the conference, the SEC must also approve their applications for immediate qualification.

Mays’ case becomes particularly ugly, with Tennessee fans frustrated and a lawyer claiming Mays needs to be transferred because of an alleged “toxic environment.”

Here’s a look at how the Bulldogs’ roster breaks, per class.
