Former NHL player and coach Mike Milbury has been sidelined for the rest of the Stanley Cup Playoffs following remarks he made Thursday night about women on the NBC Sports Network.
Mike Milbury, who works as an analyst for the network, was on air during the Washington Capitals-New York Islanders game and spoke with co-host Brian Boucher about the success of the NHL bubble during the pandemic of coronavirus.
“When you think about it, it’s a great environment to play in – if you enjoy playing and enjoying long time with your teammates, it’s a perfect place,” Boucher said.
“Not even a woman here to disturb your concentration,” Milbury replied.
The comment was edited and shared on social media by a woman named Alison. The recordings have been viewed 2.3 million times so far.
On Saturday, NBC Sports PR posted a statement from Milbury in which he said: “I have decided to step down from my role at NBC Sports for the remainder of the StanleyCupPlayoffs.”
In a statement to The Washington Post, NBC Sports said it was “disappointed with Mike’s incomplete comment.” According to the post, Milbury asked for the comment.
The NHL posted a statement on Twitter calling Milbury’s remark “insensitive and insulting.”
Milbury has made several misleading remarks in the past about gender, sexuality and sexual assault.
