NBA 2K21 will retail for $ 69.99 / £ 64.99 when it launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X this year.
That’s $ 10 more than the PS4 and Xbox One version, which is priced at $ 59.99 / £ 59.99.
It is the first clue that the next generation may lead to higher software prices as development costs are expected to rise with the new machines.
The Xbox One and PS4 versions will launch on September 4, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X editions will be released alongside the new machines later this year. 2K says the more expensive versions have been “built from the ground up for next-gen consoles.”
The issue of the price of the game was discussed by former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden during the Gamelab conference last month. He told event attendees, “It’s been $ 59.99 since I started this business, but the cost of games has gone up tenfold. If you don’t have price elasticity, but you have great volatility in line cost, the model becomes more difficult. I think this generation will see those two imperatives collide. “
Layden said that one solution to rising development costs was to create shorter games.
NBA 2K21 has multiple versions, including one that spans across two generations of consoles. Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Forever Edition is available on all platforms for $ 99.99 / £ 84.99, and will feature a host of additional digital content. Also, anyone who buys this version can get the standard version of the game on the other generation at no additional cost (within the same family of consoles), so if you buy the PS4 Mama Forever Edition game, you can get the standard version on PS5 as part of the package.
“NBA 2K21 is a monumental leap for the franchise,” stated Visual Concepts President Greg Thomas.
“We are combining all of our development expertise and experience to create the best possible game, and for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, we are building the game from scratch to take full advantage of next-generation power and technology.”
