Naya Rivera has been buried. The late Joy The actress, who was found dead on Lake Piru in Ventura County, California, after going on a boat trip with her son, was honored with a private funeral and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles on 24 July, according to multiple reports.
Rivera’s death certificate, filed in Ventura County, confirms that Rivera’s cause of death was “drowning” and states that she died in a manner of “[minutes]” Persons reports. He also notes that there were no other significant conditions that contributed to his death.
On July 8, Rivera was taking an afternoon boat ride with her 4-year-old son, Josey, on Lake Piru before the tragic accident. Josey was found safe in the boat. Rivera’s body was recovered nearly a week later on July 13, and Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said at a press conference that authorities speculated that Rivera drowned after boarding his son on the boat after swim.
“The idea maybe is that the boat started to drift, it was not anchored and that it gathered enough energy to get her son back to the boat, but not enough to save herself,” he shared.

On July 14, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Rivera’s body was discovered, and announced that the cause of death was drowning by accident.
“The circumstances and visual characteristics indicated that the body was that of Naya Rivera and that the identity has been confirmed by dental comparison,” the statement read. “An X-ray of the body was performed and a complete autopsy was performed. The autopsy findings are consistent with drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with how long it was submerged.”
The autopsy revealed that “no traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified.” There was also no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in his death, “but the samples will be sent for toxicology testing.”
After his tragic death, friends, fans, and former co-stars turned to social media to express their condolences. Joy Creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan paid tribute to the deceased star and promised to establish a college fund for their son.
His family also released a statement expressing how grateful they were “for the outpouring of love and prayers for Naya, Josey and our family over the past week.”
