Nathan Fillion, Joss Whedon and the cast of Firefly talk about science fiction at Comic-Con @ Home

Sorry, Firefly Fans: Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon brought no new surprises on the table on Sunday, when some of the series’ actors gathered for an online chat from Comic-Con @ Home. But they did credit Firefly and his army of Browncoat fans with the help, for nearly two decades, to bring science fiction fandom into popular culture.

Fillion, Whedon, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, and more hooked up for a panel talk that served as a whirlwind of Fillion’s career far beyond his television turn in the early 2000s as Serenity Captain Malcolm Reynolds. But somehow the conversation kept going around Firefly, with everyone involved crediting the show, as well as Fillion’s heartfelt embrace from his passionate fan base, for helping them appreciate the power of science fiction, before being a science fiction fan.

Fillion asked Tudyk (Hoban “Wash” Washburne on the show) how Firefly rated as a professional and versatile experience Rogue One: A Star Wars Story The actor did not hesitate: “Oh, God, yes; I would say ‘number one’. It is definitely the one I get the most comments … When [first] went to [fan] conventions, and being introduced to a world he thought he knew; [a world] It was kind of fun, it wasn’t what is for sure now. “

Almost two decades after the short Fox series aired, Torres (Zoë Washburne) said he was still approached by fans “who want to talk about specific moments, and those specific moments were, wow, a long long time. [But] that’s what television and movies are designed for: to capture those moments in time. “

FireflyThe fan following, Fillion said, has provided exactly the kind of positive feedback loop that rewards the team that made the series in the first place. “You never lose Firefly amateurs. Once you’re Browncoat, you’re locked up, “he joked, adding that science fiction, as a genre,” has been good for me. I had never been a part of something like that; with that intensity … thank God it had meaning for me. “

If that sounds like a fan service, it isn’t. Fillion said he still keeps in touch with the Firefly team more than with any of his previous projects. Whedon (who worked with Fillion from Fillion’s role as Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) even revealed that Fillion is still the “captain” of an ongoing text thread between the original Firefly crew that, to this day, has never stopped going, despite their latest outfit, Whedon’s indie film Serenity – is fast approaching on the 15th anniversary of when it was first released in theaters.

“What is really charming about the legacy of Firefly“Torres said, it is that” it is like any great book that has touched you. When you [first] read it, maybe you were 15 years old. And then you visit him again when you’re 25, and he tells you different things … Firefly he does that. There are people who experienced it for the first time and now share it with their children. ”

The show “is a staple” of science fiction, added Tudyk, who about half the commitment he receives from fans of all stripes (including Star Warsbecause, as he joked, “Star Wars the movies are pretty big “) still revolves around Firefly: “If you like fandom and haven’t seen Firefly, it’s like – ‘Come in! ”
