The case has been solved.
In a season that is sure to have weird things going on all the time, something really weird happened during the Baltimore Orioles’ Boston Red Sox stalemate on Friday.
During the third inning, Eovaldi came out on the mound with number 7. Of course, his number is actually 17, which was what he had been using the first two innings. When he returned for the fourth and subsequent stanzas, he was wearing his usual number.
Theories about exchanging an entry abounded on Twitter, and after the game, Eovaldi brushed aside the rumors.
“So, I guess (Christian Vázquez) and I both sweat a lot so we had the jerseys hanging in the batting cage, and I didn’t realize theirs were there, too,” Eovaldi said. “I took a look at it and I just saw all seven, I assumed it was mine and I grabbed it by the hanger and put it on. And once I got back to the booth they said, ‘Hey, that’s a Vazquey boy,’ and I said, ‘What?’ And they were like, ‘Oh, you got his shirt on,’ I said, ‘I thought I felt a little tight in my arms,’ but it’s all good. ”
The change did not end with deterring Eovaldi, who had a pretty strong start in his first opening on Opening Day. In six innings, he allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
