NASA astronauts conduct the second spaceflight of 2021



Although the astronauts started spaceflight at 7:56 a.m. ET, they worked faster through their to-do list and also received some “get-f” two items that were planned for the future spacewalk.

The spacewalk ended at 1:16 a.m. ET and lasted five hours and 20 minutes.

It was the second spacewalk experience for Glover, who is a few months into his first spaceflight at the station.

This was the fourth spacewalk for Hopkins, who had previously completed two spacewalks during his first six-month stay on the space station from September 2013 to March 2014.

This was the 234th spacewalk in support of the assembly, maintenance and upgrade of the space station.

Astronauts Mike Hopkins and Victor Glover Jr. met on Wednesday, January 27, for their first spacewalk.

Hopkins wore a red striped spacesuit as crew member 1 and Glover crew was in a spacesuit without stripes as member 2.

The astronauts installed the final lithium-ion battery adapter plate and attached it to the battery, which was installed robotically in front of the spacewalk. The installation will begin work on completing the replacement of the old nickel-hydrogen battery outside the station, which began in January 2017.

The new battery is more efficient and provides the space station with an improvement in power efficiency.

Glover and Hopkins then went to the opposite side of the station to focus on other improvements. Their work includes replacing the external standard camera with a new high-definition camera at Destiny Laboratory, and replacing the camera and light assembly components needed for the Japanese robotic arm’s camera camera system, located outside the Japanese Kibo module. They also routed some Ethernet cables.

Hopkins, Glover, NASA astronaut Shannon Waker and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Sochi Noguchi flew to the space station aboard the SpaceX crew Dragon Resilience spacecraft in mid-November. He joined NASA astronauts Kate Rubins and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzykov and Sergei Kud-Sverkov, who were already on the station after launching in October.

Rubins and Noguchi were tasked with operating a robotic arm from inside the space station to help the astronauts work outside.

There are plans to build more spacewalks for the crew near the end of February and the beginning of March.

Glover and Rubins will connect for a third spacewalk to prepare the station’s power system to install the new solar array, which will increase the station’s power supply.

Rubins and Noguchi will operate the fourth spacewalk to continue the upgrade for the space station.

During these long astronauts, astronauts go through alternating cycles of day and night every 45 minutes, working against the warm, bright light of the sun as well as the cold darkness of space. This is because the space station orbits the earth at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour.
