Hurricane Genevieve lost some of its punch when it passed the southern end of the Mexican Baja California Peninsula on Thursday, though it still devastated the tourist area with hurricane force winds and heavy rain.

Genevieve was a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Tuesday with winds of 130 mph, but weakened to Category 1 force as it pushed past the Los Cabos region, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

A U.S. Navy Captain, Cassidy spent 11 years as a member of the Navy SEALs Team earlier in his career. He was elected in May 2004 as a NASA astronaut.

Cassidy recently said goodbye to his fellow NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken in their historic mission to the ISS. Hurley and Behnken crashed into the Gulf of Mexico in a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship on August 2.
