Nas returns to the scene today (Aug. 14) with his Hit-Boy-produced single “Ultra Black,” and he rejects fellow rapper Doja Cat right in the first verse.
In a song praising his Blackness, the hip-hop heavyweight in New York calls her as well as Michael Jackson for losing them in a metaphorical and physical sense, respectively, when they rap, “We goin ‘ultra black, unapologetically black / The reverse of Doja Cat, Michael Blackson black. “The” Say So “hitmaker came under fire in May after news broke that they often hung out in what were considered racist, alt-right chat rooms.
Doja started following trend on Twitter after the release of the song, and CupcakKe published how she was none of the shot that Nas took. But she referred to Lil Nas X in her response on social media by tweeting, “He builds me to regret the remix of the old city hat.” The 23-year-old Chicago rapper recorded a remix of “Old Town Hoe” in April 2019, just as his remix of “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus ruled for 19 years at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the longest -running no. 1 song on the card.
“Ultra Black” comes from the legendary MC’s highly anticipated 12th studio album King’s disease, which will be released next Friday, August 21 via Mass Appeal. It’s his first new album in two years since Nasir in June 2018, during Kanye West’s bustling summer of producing five different albums included Nasir.
He pleaded guilty to something in the works between him and Hit-Boy back in April during an interview with DJ and VJ Ralph McDaniels. “Hit-Boy, that was fun working with him. He played a piece in the field battles the next day … of something. We have some things,” Nas said, referring to a Verzuz field on March 27. between Hit-Boy and Boi-1da.
