If Dan Snyder wants a new stadium for his soccer team within the boundaries of the District of Columbia, he must first change the name of the team.
According to Liz Clarke of the Washington PostA name change is a prerequisite for any discussion of the use of the site where RFK Stadium is currently located for the construction of a new NFL stadium for the Washington franchise.
“There is no viable, local or federal, way for the Washington soccer team to return to Washington, DC, without first changing the name of the team,” said Washington DC Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio.
The land on which the RFK Stadium is located is federally owned by the National Park Service and controlled by the city until 2038.
FedEx Field is the team’s current home and has been since 1997. It is located approximately eight miles east of RFK Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Meanwhile, RFK Stadium is located in the shadow of the United States Capitol in the heart of Washington DC. Snyder is looking for a new stadium for the team, as he sees it as part of the reason for the low attendance at the franchise.
Pressure continues to mount against the team to change the name, which is considered a racial slur. Investment firms are putting pressure on sponsors to get their support from the team. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that it is time to change the name. So did the granddaughter of team founder George Preston Marshall, who said last week that she was glad to see the memorial to her grandfather removed from the RFK stadium site.
“Time [for the name] It’s over, “said US Representative Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.), chairman of the House’s Natural Resources Committee.” There is no way to justify it. Either you go into this century or not. It depends on the owner of the team doing that “.
