“The squirrel didn’t care, he wanted something – he wanted blood,” she said. “A few days later, I’ll come out with a shovel, just, looking around.”

It is not clear why squirrels are attacking this particular New York City neighborhood.

“Squirrels and many other small rats are rarely infected with rabies,” the NYC Health Department said in a statement. “If New Yorkers believe they have seen a rabies-infected animal, they should report it to 311. Any resident who has done so should contact their doctor and report it to the department’s animal bite unit.”

Records on NYC Health show no positive cases of rabies in squirrels in 2020. No confirmed infections have been reported in the last 10 years.

“The NYC Health Department received a complaint about an aggressive squirrel in Rego Park and advised the property owner to hire a New York State-licensed trapper,” a health agency spokesman told Fox News by email. “We are actively working with residents to find out more about bite events and coordination with Trapper.”

Wildlife NYC advises people to refrain from feeding squirrels, to stay away from them when they are in mind, and to seal homes to avoid nest infestation.
