Musk says Tesla’s two-factor verification is “embarrassingly late”, but coming soon

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, tweeted Friday that two-factor verification for its app is “embarrassingly late”, but apparently is now underway. Musk did not provide a timeline, but said on Twitter that two-factor verification – which added an extra step to verify a user’s identity when signing up – is final validation. ”

Judging by Musk’s tweet, Tesla’s 2FA will be available via SMS and authenticator apps, which are generally considered safer. Musk said last yearr that Tesla was working on “fundamental upgrades” to Tesla’s core operating system and would shortly thereafter introduce 2FA. Tesla’s app basically serves as the key to the company’s latest models, allowing it to be remotely locked and unlocked, among other options.

Tesla cars are generally considered theft-proof because they always include GPS allowing owners to track their cars. The company introduced PIN code entry for its cars in 2018. But adding 2FA, which introduces a code generated from a separate device (usually a smartphone), will add yet another layer of security for its keyless entry systems.

Musk did not say when Tesla’s 2FA would be available.
