Clemson and South Carolina will not meet again on the grid in the regular season until November 27, 2021 in Columbia, as things are currently scheduled.
The SEC made that call Thursday when the league decided to play a 10-game conference schedule without the option for a member school to play outside of the conference. The Tigers and Gamecocks had clashed each season since 1909.
Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said he values the annual matchup and wanted it to happen.
“It is unfortunate that we are not going to play Clemson this season, but that was not our choice,” Muschamp said in a school statement. “It was a league decision. It is a game that is important to our program, our institution, and our state, and one that President Caslen and Coach Tanner pushed hard to do. I hope to renew the rivalry in 2021.”
South Carolina AD Ray Tanner echoed those sentiments.
“I am disappointed that we are not going to play our rival in the state this year,” Tanner said. “It is a great rivalry and one of the best in the country. The pandemic has created many challenges and forced us to make adjustments. I am pleased that we are planning to play soccer this fall. I hope to renew the rivalry in 2021.”
Clemson declined to provide a comment from Dabo Swinney when TigerNet approached.
Tigers AD Dan Radakovich issued a statement.
“Clemson aggressively pressured the ACC to include an additional non-conference game with the primary purpose of maintaining our rivalry game with South Carolina,” said Radakovich. “We are disappointed to hear the SEC’s announced scheduling decision as we know how important The Palmetto Bowl is to the State of South Carolina. We will work to fill the opening on our schedule right away.”
South Carolina BOT member Chuck Allen tells @TheAthleticCFB that the SEC vote was 13-1. “I understand that the vote was 13-1 with our president, Bob Caslen, being the only dissenting vote and part of the reason for his dissenting vote was the rivalry with Clemson.”
