MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ implies Trump has financial ties to hydroxychloroquine: ‘Follow the money’

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” namesake Joe Scarborough hinted Thursday that President Trump is somehow benefiting from hydroxychloroquine, which the president has branded as a possible treatment for COVID-19.

“You have the president running to raise funds without a mask on a crowd of people. You have him retweeting a woman talking about demons and other strange things, making fun of masks, talking about hydroxychloroquine that [former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner] Scott Gottlieb and almost all the other medical professionals say, ‘It doesn’t work in this disease,’ ”Scarborough said.

“It does not work. I don’t know who is making money, right, but stick with it, “Scarborough said as his wife and co-host Mika Brzezinski added,” You have to ask that question. “

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” namesake Joe Scarborough hinted that President Trump is somehow benefiting from hydroxychloroquine.

“Follow the money, for someone to continue taking hydroxychloroquine, you should ask, ‘What is the money connection?’ Because there is no point in continuing to push the drug while the president continues to do that, that doesn’t work, that every medical professional says doesn’t work, “Scarborough said.

The antimalarial drug debate has been violent for weeks and critics of Trump have accused him of over-selling an unproven treatment. At one point, Trump even said he was taking the drug himself.

In April, Brzezinski suggested that Trump had a “financial link” with hydroxychloroquine.

“A lot of people would say, follow the money. There has to be some kind of financial bond with someone, somewhere that has the president repeatedly pressing this,” Brzezinski said at the time.

Months later, the polarizing drug continues to feature prominently in the news.

Earlier this week, Twitter removed a video that was promoted on the Trump account showing what appeared to be doctors in Washington praising the benefits of using hydroxychloroquine to treat patients with COVID-19.

The video, which was widely shared on social media, appeared to include a dozen doctors in front of the Supreme Court building in Washington. It was unclear when the video was filmed.

The video made spectacular claims about the treatment that essentially called it anything but a cure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for COVID-19.

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin also suggested that Trump may have a financial interest in promoting the drug.

Ohio pharmacies, clinics, and other medical facilities are now prohibited from dispensing or selling hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus.

State regulations were updated Wednesday to reflect the change, but they also included several warnings, such as whether the prescription is for a pet or if it is part of a clinical trial to evaluate the drug’s effectiveness when used to combat COVID-19.
