The Movies Anywhere app is free, but all Watch Together viewers must purchase the movie or receive a Screen Pass for that title. Screen Pass, which is still in open beta, allows users to share selected movies they have purchased with friends and family for a limited time.
Watch Together offers some advantages over other watch party options. Hulu, for example, only allows viewers to join their watching parties from the web app, and everyone must be a No Ads subscriber. Watch Together is available on mobile devices, the web, and many smart TVs. While it’s not exactly free, if you combine it with Screen Pass, only one person has to pay for the movie, making it one of the most affordable options. Twitch also requires that its viewers subscribe to Amazon Prime. Overall, official support for shared viewing is still extremely rare. Netflix has not had official support since its features disappeared from Xbox 360.
To start watching Watch Together, find the title you want to watch on Movies Anywhere. On the details page, select the View Together button and the “I want to host” button. Then you will get a 6 character room code and a URL to share with your guests.
